Cry week is coming, and it's normal

Progress reports, report cards and conferences all land in the same stretch.

With Tammy Striler · 1:28 · Filmed fall 2020

What to take away

  • Everyone comes back from summer perky and tan with no bags under their eyes.
  • Then it's new kids, maybe a new grade level, progress reports, report cards, conferences.
  • Around that first report-card-and-conference stretch, it hits. That's cry week.
  • It's normal, and it's what we do. Go home, have a glass of wine, and move on.

Why it works

Naming it in advance is the tip. First-year teachers who hit that week without warning tend to read it as evidence they've chosen wrong; knowing it arrives on a schedule — and arrives for the thirty-year veterans too — makes it survivable.
